The challenge

After Apple's iPhone launched in 2007, Samsung saw their feature phone business threatened. They needed to compete in smartphones quickly but Google's Android was available to everyone. The challenge was differentiating in a commodity OS environment against Apple's premium positioning.

The strategy

Samsung decided to compete across every price point simultaneously — from ultra-budget phones in emerging markets to premium Galaxy S flagships competing directly with iPhone. They would win through scale, not premium positioning alone.
