The challenge
In 2004, Dove's parent company Unilever noticed that only 2% of women worldwide described themselves as beautiful. The beauty industry was built on making women feel inadequate. Dove needed to differentiate in a crowded personal care market dominated by idealized imagery.
The strategy
Dove launched the Real Beauty campaign challenging the beauty industry's narrow definition of beauty. By celebrating diverse, real women instead of models, Dove positioned itself as the brand that was on women's side rather than exploiting their insecurities.
