PhonePe: UPI Super App Strategy
The challenge
Dropbox launched in 2008 when cloud storage barely existed. Founders Drew Houston and Arash Ferdowsi had a great product but almost no marketing budget. Traditional startup growth methods like Google ads proved too expensive for a freemium product.
The strategy
Dropbox invented a referral growth loop — give users free additional storage for every friend they successfully referred. This turned every satisfied user into a salesperson with a concrete incentive to bring in friends.

- Referral programs that give value to both referrer and referee create sustainable viral growth.
- Growth hacking with zero budget forces creativity that often outperforms paid acquisition.
- Freemium models work when the free version is genuinely useful but limited enough to motivate upgrades.
