Airbnb: Trust-Based Marketplace
The challenge
In 2008, Airbnb founders Brian Chesky and Joe Gebbia were struggling to pay rent. They had an idea to rent air mattresses in their apartment. The core challenge was convincing strangers to sleep in other strangers' homes — a massive trust barrier.
The strategy
The strategy centered on building trust through design. Every element — profiles, reviews, verified IDs, secure payments, host guarantees — was engineered to make strangers feel safe enough to open their homes and sleep in someone else's.
