McDonald's: Franchise Expansion
The challenge
Ray Kroc was a milkshake machine salesman who visited the McDonald brothers' single restaurant in 1954 and saw something remarkable — a perfectly efficient fast food system. The challenge was replicating that exact system thousands of times across different owners, staff, and locations.
The strategy
Kroc's insight was that McDonald's wasn't in the food business — it was in the systems business. The strategy was to create such detailed operational procedures that any franchisee following them exactly would produce identical results to the original.
