Stripe: 7 Lines of Code — Building Developer-First Payments
How two brothers reduced payment integration from weeks to minutes — and built a $50 billion company from documentation.
The challenge
In 2010, accepting online payments required working with legacy banking APIs, filling out complex merchant applications, waiting weeks for approval, and integrating poorly documented SDKs. The average developer spent 2-4 weeks just setting up payments. Patrick and John Collison believed this was completely unnecessary.
The strategy
Stripe's insight was that the developer was the customer, not the business executive or the payment operations team. If developers loved the API, they would advocate for Stripe within their companies. The product strategy was: make the documentation so good and the integration so simple that developers would choose Stripe over all alternatives.
