IKEA: Flat Pack Furniture Model
The challenge
IKEA founder Ingvar Kamprad wanted to sell well-designed furniture at prices ordinary people could afford. Traditional furniture was expensive because of high manufacturing costs, retailer margins, and delivery. He needed to fundamentally rethink every cost in the business.
The strategy
The insight was that customers could do the assembly themselves if the instructions were clear enough. This single idea — flat pack furniture — eliminated enormous costs in manufacturing, storage, shipping, and retail space.
