The challenge
Eric Yuan left Cisco's WebEx in 2011 because he was frustrated that video conferencing required too many steps and was too unreliable. Enterprise video conferencing was dominated by Cisco, Microsoft, and Citrix. Starting a new video company seemed like competing against giants.
The strategy
Zoom focused obsessively on one metric: would you recommend this to a friend? They made joining a meeting require zero software installation, optimized for low-bandwidth connections, and made the product work reliably in countries with poor internet infrastructure.
