The challenge
In 2004, Amazon was growing but customers were abandoning carts when they saw shipping fees. Purchase frequency was lower than desired. The company needed a way to increase loyalty and order frequency without cutting prices permanently.
The strategy
Jeff Bezos pushed for a flat-fee unlimited shipping model against the advice of his finance team. He bet on psychology — once customers paid the annual fee, they would feel compelled to use Amazon for everything to get their money's worth.
